Agra, June 2024 – In a significant move to promote cultural heritage and wellness, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced free entry to all centrally protected monuments, including the iconic Taj Mahal, on World Yoga Day, June 21. However, an additional fee of Rs 200 will still apply for access to the main dome of the Taj Mahal.
ASI Announces Free Entry to Monuments on World Yoga Day
The ASI’s decision aims to raise awareness about the importance of yoga and its benefits. Superintending Archaeologist Dr. Rajkumar Patel stated that, in accordance with Rule 6 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, visitors will enjoy complimentary access to these historic sites on Yoga Day. However, an additional fee of Rs 200 would still apply to those wishing to visit the main dome of the Taj Mahal.
Special Provisions for Eid Celebrations
In addition to the Yoga Day initiative, the ASI has also announced special provisions for Eid celebrations. On June 17, Namazis will be granted free entry to the Taj Mahal for two hours to perform their prayers. This move underscores the inclusive approach of the ASI towards facilitating cultural and religious practices at these historical sites.
Positive Impact on Local Tourism
The decision has been warmly welcomed by local tourism stakeholders. Prahalad Agarwal, President of the Agra Tourist Welfare Chamber, praised the ASI’s initiative, highlighting its potential to boost tourism in Agra.
“This is a commendable decision by the ASI, reflecting a thoughtful approach to increasing tourism possibilities in Agra. Free access to our heritage sites on such significant days not only promotes cultural appreciation but also attracts more visitors, benefiting the local economy,” Agarwal remarked.
Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, are preparing to welcome an influx of tourists. The free entry initiative is expected to draw large crowds, both domestic and international, enhancing Agra’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.
